Eighteen

Tessa drove to Luke’s house in the early evening. He’d sent her a text that he was on his way back and would be home soon, so she stopped at the store to pick up some groceries, wanting to make both of them dinner. She wasn’t a great cook, but she could manage in the kitchen.

When she’d finished her work for the day and made an appointment with the doctor Emily referred, she surfed the internet for recipes on garlic pasta. She’d found one that made her mouth water. For the first time in weeks, she actually had a craving for food, and she wanted to satisfy it.

The pasta was done, and the chicken cooked. The doorbell had her pause her task of slicing the chicken into strips. Setting the knife down, she wiped her hands on a dish towel and went to the door.

“Who is it?” When no answer came, she raised up on her tiptoes and peeked through the peephole to find the top of a woman’s head. Dark brown hair with streaks of gray. Tessa knew that hair. When the woman looked up, Tessa’s breath caught. How did she know where to find me?

She wrapped her fist against the door. “Open up, Tessa! I know you’re in there.”

Tessa smoothed her hands over her blouse. Her still flat stomach turned with anxiety. She took a few deep breaths and ran her hands over her head. It’s okay. You know her game. Just don’t let anything she says get to you.

Tessa turned the deadbolt and opened the door a few inches. “Mom?”

“Are you going to let me in?”

Tessa opened the door fully, motioning to Cindy to enter. She did, and in no time, was silently scrutinizing her surroundings. Tessa couldn’t imagine what she could possibly find wrong. The house was pristine and a thousand times more comfortable and welcoming than any place Cindy had ever kept while Tessa was growing up.

Her mother turned to face her. “What are you doing here?” The clip in her voice told Tessa this was not going to be a fun visit. And the alcohol drifting off her mother proved Tessa’s initial feelings. Cindy’s words always held a sharper edge when she was drinking.

“This is a friend’s house. Can I ask what you’re doing here? How did you know to come here looking for me?”

“I went to the address you originally gave me when you arrived here, but you weren’t there. I was worried when no one answered the door, so I used my phone to track your location.”

Shit! She’d forgotten that Cindy had tricked her into allowing one of those geo-tracking services to monitor her number while she attended college.

“I just worry about you. What if something happens. I just want to always make sure you’re safe.”

It was a plausible reason for any parent to want to keep track of their child and the only reason Tessa allowed it. But it was clear after her last conversation with Cindy that her wishes for boundaries fell by the waist side.
