RESTLESS REST AREA

As you travel west down State Route 2 just before you reach Erie County, you will find the last rest area for the next 60 miles on this road. Known to the Ohio Department of Transportation as Rest Area 3-44, this stop, as with most rest areas on our freeway system, is in an isolated area between more populated areas. Surrounded by a scenic wooded lot with elevated views of the Vermilion River, it’s a great place for travelers to stretch their legs after a few hours behind the wheel. The beautiful setting may be the reason why a woman chose this location to end her life in the early 1980s.

The following was our experience at the rest area in 2016. We happened to be on one of our ghost tours when we pulled into the rest area for a restroom break one October night. As our group filed into the building, a short, thickset man in his mid-fifties with a mop in his hand walked over to us and asked about the bus. I described the various tours and services we offer and that we were on our way to Gore Orphanage. His face lit up at the mention of the ghost tours.

“You know this rest area is haunted, don’t you?” he said. He introduced himself as Jeff Hastings and told us that he had been the night caretaker for almost nine years. He said he had personally witnessed some pretty strange things in his time working there.
