I remembered⦠not wanting anything to do with Aram.
Parts of the past were coming back to me now, in bits and pieces, but what stood out most was a feeling of⦠no, I donât want to do this. Last night, some things came to me fuzzy, more feeling than picture. In the moment, it was easy to just⦠believe it. Paired with the select fragments I had, Aramâs words were wonderful, and it felt good.
This morning⦠there was clarity. The day Aram and I were bound together was wrought with uncertainty, frustration, anger⦠the sense of not being in control. But I was an adult now. I had control.
Our pairing⦠it was contrived. Some political thing between kingdoms, which I couldnât quite recall, but one thing I did know⦠I hadnât wanted to do it. In mortal years, I would have been just barely nineteen that day, and a virgin at that. Iâd never even had a boyfriend, let alone dated. My ability to choose my partner had been stripped because of my royal title, and now, even more than then⦠I couldnât get over the feeling that it wasnât okay.
âCome have breakfast with me.â
Those had been Aramâs first words to me when we woke up the morning after my revelation in front of those meaningful images on my wall. Uncertainty swept through my chest, but I agreed, mostly because he seemed so⦠excited. It was sweet.
One thing I felt sure of was Aramâs feelings for me. Even before last night, back when I still thought our encounters were nothing more than my own vivid fantasies, heâd touched me with the knowledge and care of someone who knew their womanâs body, and had a desire to please. Perhaps... that was the reason for sex as the conduit to get through to me. Using arousal to cloud my mind enough that I would listen to what was, to my mortal mind, an absolutely ridiculous story.
Now, we sat outside on the patio at Honeybee, eating thick-cut pepper-crusted bacon and buttermilk waffles. Silence lingered between us, as if neither knew what to say to break the building tension. I took a long sip from my grapefruit juice, then chased it with a gulp of water before clearing my throat.
âUm⦠Aram?â
His expression turned stony, then he lowered his forkful of waffles back to his plate. âYes?â
I swallowed hard, narrowing my eyes, looking in his direction, but not directly at him. âThis⦠us⦠this isnât right.â
âWhat do you mean⦠not right?â
âWellâ¦â I pushed out a little sigh, then angled my head toward a couple I saw walking past. âLook at them.â
The man was a deep brown, with locs, and she was slightly darker, with long twisted braids. They walked side by side, being careful not to touch, butâ¦they liked each other. I could feel the shared attraction, the sexual tension⦠the trepidation that came along with wanting someone you werenât sure you could have, the achingly human feeling of wondering if the other felt the same.
