Chapter 6

“What if I had to pee?” Michelle glared at the Loa reflected in the mirror. “Or do you have some perverted story to fit that occasion as well?”

“Actually I—”

“Don’t even think it, I’m sorry I asked.” She held up her hand to shut him up. “Look, I know I can see you and you love the attention, but someone, somewhere is performing a ritual or requesting help for their less-than-stellar love life as we speak. You could go to them right now, temporarily hijack their body and blow their sex-deprived minds. Doesn’t that sound like more fun than hanging out in a bathroom and getting on my last nerve?”

“I’m taking a holiday.” Bone Daddy stood beside her at the sink, watching her fuss with her hair while she tried to get herself together. “Besides, you need me more than they do.”

“Your delusion is as big as your ego.” She wasn’t sure what was wrong with her, but whatever it was, a voodoo spirit was the last damn thing she needed. She’d been fine until Ben arrived. Until that toast from Rousseau’s sister had made her feel pathetically sorry for herself.

Until they started mentioning babies.

Some maid of honor she was turning out to be.

Celestin and Allegra were going to be amazing parents. Neither one of them would ever let their children doubt they were adored. And now that Rousseau was no longer connected to a Loa, neither of them were cursed with the ability to see what lurked in the shadows. They could live a normal life, raise a normal family.

Normal wasn’t in Michelle’s future. She’d tried to pretend for a while, but even in New York, children had been off the table. Why would she take the chance of having twins or passing her ability to an innocent, even if she was able to find a man that could accept every part of her life?

“I find I’ve grown rather fond of you and the others,” Bone Daddy admitted gruffly. “I care about your happiness, no matter what the ungrateful boy thinks of me.” He shifted where he stood, seemingly uncomfortable with the emotion. “And your pleasure, of course.”

“Of course,” Michelle murmured, his odd behavior taking her mind off her personal worries. “If you’re planning on sticking around, you’re going to need to give Rousseau some time to get over things.”

Unfair. Even his scowl was beautiful. “I didn’t follow you in here to discuss that. If you knew what he was like before I showed up—”

“Shy? Hardworking? Human?”

“Closed off. Burdened. Punishing himself for someone else’s sins.” He shook his head, thoroughly disgusted. “Why am I bothering? You see me the way he does, and he’ll never admit that I couldn’t have stayed if some part of him didn’t accept me.”

She wished she saw him the way Rousseau did. It would be easier for everyone if she didn’t like the sexy Loa. “You’re not as bad as I thought you were, BD. You have a one-track mind, and your defensiveness about Rousseau is troublesome.
