Chapter Fourteen

Ramie

Wandering through the aisles of the baby store, I suppress a grim smile at Hayden’s dazed expression.

Babies are expensive, and I don’t think he truly understood until we traversed the store, and I pointed out the stuff I was sure we needed - needed, not wanted.

Still, being here gives me a tingle of excitement because it’s all the more real when we’re here perusing the stuff.

“Do you want a boy or a girl?” I ask absently, holding up a pale pink rattle with a tiny smiling giraffe on the side.

“Does it matter?” he mutters.

Turning to him, I say, placing my hand on my stomach, “It matters to me.”

Glancing down at my stomach, his expression tightens, and I grab his hand, pulling him from the store. I think he’s seen enough, now would be a good time to let him process the shock.

Stepping from the store, he’s quiet behind me as I stop at the window of a pet store nearby, gazing with a soft smile at the puppies tripping over each other as they fumble around playfully.

“Did you ever have a dog?” I murmur, placing my hand on the glass.

One puppy, a tiny little fur ball that surely must be a miniature something, lays by itself near the back, its small little head poking out of the straw.

And gasping, I step closer, gazing at it, as my heart melts at the cute woeful expression.

“No,” he grunts.

Turning to him, I remember my question when he says, “My dad didn’t like dogs.”

“Oh, yeah, my mom was allergic,” I murmur, turning back to the puppy in the corner.

“I don’t care if it’s a boy or a girl, just so long as I can take care of him or her,” Hayden says, stepping up and leaning in to whisper in my ear.

Turning to him, I study his grim expression, and softening at the look, I place my hand on his chest and say, “Hayden, I think you’ll be an amazing father.”

“How so?” he asks, searching my gaze.

Smiling softly, I say, “Because you’re asking the question.”

Nodding slowly, he grabs my hand and pulls me away, and I smile into the universe, hopeful for the future.
