When I woke up from my nap, Haverford was gone. It took a moment for my brain to register the sound of him cooking in the kitchen. A quick glance at my phone told me I had some time before he’d finish, so I put on some clothes and pulled out my keyboard with the headphones plugged in so I didn’t bother anyone.

I grabbed my sheet of scribbled lyrics from my creative burst Haverford had inspired earlier, then sang along as I played with one headphone cup off so I could hear myself. It sent chills down my spine at how perfectly the words fit the song. I had spent six months trying to come up with lyrics, so there was something magical about it all slotting into place in a single flash of brilliance. But it also was annoying I had been tortured for so long when the answer had been right here, waiting to be discovered.

When I finished, I studied the lyrics again, trying to see if there were any tweaks to tighten them up a little. But it was one of the rare times when everything felt so right I didn’t want to mess with them.

A quiet knock on the door made me look up. It was Haverford, who was twice as tempting in his gray sweatpants now that I had seen what he was hiding under the fabric. “What’s wrong? Did the lyrics not work?”

I hadn't noticed I was frowning. “Actually, they’re perfect. I just realized I don’t know what to do with the song.”

He sat on the foot of the bed. “What do you mean?”

“It’s an excellent song worth recording, but I’m not the person who can do it.”

“The melody sounded like something Iason would sing. Why not ask him?”

I shook my head. “Like I said before, he writes his own songs.”

“Has he ever collaborated with anyone before?”

It was a fair question. “Levi’s written a couple of his songs, but they’re childhood friends. It’s different.”

Haverford didn’t seem convinced. “Maybe. But if the song is as good as it sounds, don’t you think he’d be excited to collaborate with you on it? You’re friends, after all.”

I started to tell him there was no way in hell Iason would ever agree to that, but something stopped me.

“It can’t hurt to play it for him and ask about it, right? The worst he can do is say no. I may not know him personally, but from everything you’ve told me, I can’t imagine him turning down a song as amazing as yours.”

I struggled not to smile at how sweet it was to have his support. “For all you know, the lyrics could suck.”

“The only thing that sucks about you is that gifted mouth of yours.” He stood up and kissed the top of my head, melting my heart. It was so much easier to give in than to fight so hard to resist his charms. “Dinner will be in about ten minutes. Why don’t you ask him while you wait?”

I appreciated him shutting the door for my privacy.
