CHAPTER TWELVE

HUGGING HIM TIGHTLY all the way back to the hotel was the perfect ending to a perfect afternoon. Drew had seemed to take as much joy from it as she had and he’d talked about how much good it did the kids and their parents. Despite her father’s clear disdain for the callow and useless profession his daughter had chosen, in Drew’s eyes she was doing something important. Something that had brought him to tears at one point. He’d wiped them away quickly, but she’d seen them.

‘Everyone looks busy.’ He’d waited for her to get off the back of the bike and was surveying the scene of activity in front of the hotel.

‘Looks as if Joel’s happy with the scenes they shot today. We might be on the move.’ Sophie had tried not to think about the impending move. A new set of hotel corridors to get lost in. Pages of notes that needed to be made, just so she could present some semblance of normality to the world around her.

He pulled one of his gloves off and his hand wandered to her arm, as if he was steadying her. As if he knew that she was standing on the edge of a dark precipice and that all she could do was jump, along with the others, and hope that everything was going to be okay.

‘I thought we weren’t moving to Hertfordshire until the weekend.’ He swung off the seat of the motorbike, unzipping his jacket.

‘We’ve been making good time. If everything went well today, then there’s only another day’s filming before we’re ready to go.’

‘In that case...’ he started to stroll towards the entrance of the hotel and Sophie followed him ‘...there’s something I’ve been meaning to discuss with you.’

‘What’s that?’

‘This might be a good time to think about restructuring things so they work a bit better for you.’

‘You mean, facing the facts instead of hiding from them?’

‘I wouldn’t put it in those words exactly.’

She grinned up at him. ‘Stop being nice to me, Drew. It unnerves me. And you know I get confused when you don’t say exactly what you mean.’

He chuckled, taking her key along with his own from the receptionist. ‘Okay, then. Now you’ve finally decided that being a diva isn’t going to solve your problems, it’s about time you looked squarely at your other options.’

‘That’s better.’ She grinned up at him. ‘So what are my other options?’

‘Staying somewhere away from the crew, where you can get some peace and quiet...’ He counted on his fingers. ‘Having a therapist with you for all or part of the day. Telling Joel...’

She took the key to her suite from his hand and opened the door. ‘Telling Joel. Are you sure about that one?’

‘No. It’s just a suggestion. You know your own business better than I do, and you can assess the possible implications, but I think that Joel knowing could help you with the day-to-day things.’

Sophie sat down with a bump.

Everything he’d said was perfectly reasonable.
