CHAPTER TWO
CHRISTOPHER STARED AT the woman whom heâd thought of as his hero. Why was she so angry at Miss Taylorâs generous offer? He put up a hand. âI never said weâd move in with your aunt.â
âGood. Because youâre not.â
Tempted to contradict her just to take the smirk off her face, he instead counted to three, like heâd taught his children, before things were said that couldnât be taken back. At three, he drew in a deep breath. âYour aunt is very kind, but I donât think moving in with her is the best idea.â
Miss Taylor started to protest, but Penny cut her off. âExactly. She has enough going on that she doesnât need to take on anything else.â
âI understand completely.â And he did. This was his problem, not Miss Taylorâs. âIâll find other arrangements.â
Penny nodded at him. âIf I can helpâ¦â
Miss Taylor cleared her throat. âIf you two are finished deciding my life for me, Iâd like to add something.â She pointed at Penny. âYou donât get to decide what Iâm able to do. And you.â She pointed at him. âStop being too proud to accept a little help. You have two children to think about.â
âI havenât stopped thinking about them.â He placed Caesar on the grass next to his feet, then glanced at his watch. It was just past noon, with hours to go before the school day ended, but he wanted to see his kids. Wanted to hug them and assure himself that they could face even this. At least theyâd be together. âIn fact, Iâll need to go to the school and tell them what happened.â
âAnd take them where?â When he didnât answer, Miss Taylor smiled widely at him. âItâs a short-term solution. Thatâs it. Take a few days over the holiday to figure things out.â
She had a point. Once Thanksgiving was over, motels would have open rooms. He only had to get through the next few days. Then he could move the family out of Miss Taylorâs home. The question of how long theyâd be without a house made his head hurt. Finally, he nodded. âOkay. But just for a few days.â
âNo.â Penny stepped between her aunt and himself. She looked like an angel ready to do battle. âI wonât let you move in. My aunt isnât able to take care of you all.â
Her aunt smiled at her. âThen you can move in, too, and help me out. Iâm sure Shelby wouldnât mind if you stayed with me for a while.â
âThatâs not the point.â
Miss Taylor gave her niece a stern look until Penny finally held up her hands. âFine. Temporarily.â She glared at him before turning on her heel and joining the rest of her squad.
He felt as if heâd just made an enemy, but Miss Taylor laughed it off. âOh, weâre going to have so much fun. Now leave the dog with me, and you go pick up your children and bring them over to my house. I can watch them while you go shop for those essentials youâll need.
