“Nate, you look like you don’t know whether you lost a horse or just found a halter,” Ryder said, spotting his brother leaning against the outside of the arena fence. Normally the most carefree of his brothers, Nate didn’t appear to have his head in the game and that could spell disaster for a bull rider. “What’s up?”

“Nothing,” Nate answered, looking up. He replaced his serious expression with a smile. “I’ve just been mentally reviewing what I know about the bull I drew for today’s round. That’s all.”

To the outward eye, most anyone would think Nate was shooting straight with them. Ryder knew better. There was a shadow in his brother’s eyes that he had never seen before, and Nate’s easy expression looked forced.

Lane had been right. There was more going on with Nate than a case of wounded pride over being dumped for the first time in his life.

Ryder claimed a space along the fence next to his brother and, leaning back against it, folded his arms across his chest. “You want to talk about it?”

“Nope.” To his brother’s credit, Nate didn’t try to deny there was more going on with him than thinking about the bull he’d drawn.

He hadn’t expected his brother to open up to him and it wasn’t Ryder’s style to push the issue. “You know I’ll have your back out there. But just in case, keep your mind on business or turn out and call it a day. There’s no sense in either one of us getting hurt if you’re not up for this.”

His suggestion that Nate have the bull released into the arena without riding him when it came his turn, produced the result Ryder had been looking for. Determination had replaced the shadow in Nate’s gaze.

“Like hell I will,” Nate retorted, shoving away from the fence. “I’ve never turned out and I’m not about to start now.” Squaring his shoulders, he gave Ryder his familiar cocky grin. “You better take your own advice and be a little more careful, brother. You’re the one with the sexy lady waiting on you when the round is over.”

“Talked to Lane, did you?” Ryder asked. He had expected Nate to mention the new development between himself and Summer at some point.

Nodding, Nate reached behind his thigh to buckle his leather chaps, then did the same with the other leg. “Yeah, Lane was in charge of holding the money for the pool.”

“So what was the bet and which one of you won?”

Ryder wasn’t the least bit surprised that his brothers had been making wagers on his relationship with Summer. They all made bets with each other on just about everything. Always had and probably always would.

“The bet was a hundred bucks each on how long it would take for you to wake up,” Nate answered, laughing. “Jaron won.”

“What did I win?” Jaron asked, walking over to join them.

“The pool where you all bet on when I’d wake up and realize Summer is more than my best friend,” Ryder said, shaking his head.
