âNate, you look like you donât know whether you lost a horse or just found a halter,â Ryder said, spotting his brother leaning against the outside of the arena fence. Normally the most carefree of his brothers, Nate didnât appear to have his head in the game and that could spell disaster for a bull rider. âWhatâs up?â
âNothing,â Nate answered, looking up. He replaced his serious expression with a smile. âIâve just been mentally reviewing what I know about the bull I drew for todayâs round. Thatâs all.â
To the outward eye, most anyone would think Nate was shooting straight with them. Ryder knew better. There was a shadow in his brotherâs eyes that he had never seen before, and Nateâs easy expression looked forced.
Lane had been right. There was more going on with Nate than a case of wounded pride over being dumped for the first time in his life.
Ryder claimed a space along the fence next to his brother and, leaning back against it, folded his arms across his chest. âYou want to talk about it?â
âNope.â To his brotherâs credit, Nate didnât try to deny there was more going on with him than thinking about the bull heâd drawn.
He hadnât expected his brother to open up to him and it wasnât Ryderâs style to push the issue. âYou know Iâll have your back out there. But just in case, keep your mind on business or turn out and call it a day. Thereâs no sense in either one of us getting hurt if youâre not up for this.â
His suggestion that Nate have the bull released into the arena without riding him when it came his turn, produced the result Ryder had been looking for. Determination had replaced the shadow in Nateâs gaze.
âLike hell I will,â Nate retorted, shoving away from the fence. âIâve never turned out and Iâm not about to start now.â Squaring his shoulders, he gave Ryder his familiar cocky grin. âYou better take your own advice and be a little more careful, brother. Youâre the one with the sexy lady waiting on you when the round is over.â
âTalked to Lane, did you?â Ryder asked. He had expected Nate to mention the new development between himself and Summer at some point.
Nodding, Nate reached behind his thigh to buckle his leather chaps, then did the same with the other leg. âYeah, Lane was in charge of holding the money for the pool.â
âSo what was the bet and which one of you won?â
Ryder wasnât the least bit surprised that his brothers had been making wagers on his relationship with Summer. They all made bets with each other on just about everything. Always had and probably always would.
âThe bet was a hundred bucks each on how long it would take for you to wake up,â Nate answered, laughing. âJaron won.â
âWhat did I win?â Jaron asked, walking over to join them.
âThe pool where you all bet on when Iâd wake up and realize Summer is more than my best friend,â Ryder said, shaking his head.
