By early November the snow was four feet deep on the runs. Wyatt had hoped for more but, with the help of the snow machines, there was enough to start the season. The lodge and hotel were booked, the restaurants and shops teeming with visitors.

Things were calm enough on the home front, as well. Mikey was growing into a robust, bright-eyed cherub. Chloe had started some online classes and would be going back to school spring semester, after the worst of the snow was gone. Meanwhile, she’d wheedled a promise from her father that during Christmas vacation she could have her friends up to the house for a ski holiday.

But as for Leigh...

Wyatt stood on the balcony gazing out at the leaden sky. The weather matched his mood. Ever since her trip with Chloe to the Dutchman’s Creek Mall, he’d sensed a cooling in her demeanor toward him. She almost seemed to be avoiding him. Something had happened, and he didn’t know what it was.

The frustration did nothing to dampen his desire. If anything, it made him want her even more. When misunderstandings or mixed messages had gotten between him and women before, he’d always worked it out in bed. He was confident he could do the same with Leigh, if they could just find an opportunity. There was no way he was going to let this woman escape without some serious lovemaking. He’d already waited too long. It was time he made his move.

One way or another, before the week was out, he was determined to get his beautiful nanny in bed. At the moment, she’d opted to visit her family for a couple of days. Some time off was written into her contract and she was ready for a change of scene. Wednesday night she’d be back.

She’d planned on driving her station wagon, which was in storage at the resort. But Wyatt had insisted she take the new Mercedes SUV. The canyon roads were slick with snow and he wanted her safe. Or maybe he was worried that she’d take her old rust bucket and disappear for good.

“What are you doing out here, Daddy? It’s cold.” Chloe stood in the doorway. Her sweet-as-pie smile told him she had a favor to ask. Steeling himself, he followed her inside and sat down.

“Tell me, have I been a good girl?” she asked. “Have I done my schoolwork and taken care of Mikey with Leigh gone?”

“You have.” His eyebrow quirked. “I do believe there’s hope for you yet.”

She giggled charmingly. “Well, here’s the thing, Daddy. Friday’s Monique’s birthday, and she’s having a slumber party at her house. All my girlfriends will be there. Leigh won’t even have to drive me. Amy says she can pick me up and bring me home the next day. Please say I can go.”

She looked as appealing as a puppy. Wyatt had to admit she’d earned a break. “You can go on one condition,” he said. “I want to make sure Monique’s parents will be there to keep an eye on things.
