Getting Active Together

Your Project
Turn off the TV and take some time to connect through exercise.
Purpose of the Project
Not only are you working toward healthier bodies, but also toward a healthier marriage. Make sure that you are cheering each other on as you push to go that extra mile (both literally and figuratively).
We have a friend couple who go running together every day. (A “friend couple” is any couple where we are friends with both the husband and wife, not just us wives being friends and dragging the husbands along to couples’ bocce ball.)
One of the reasons Jim and Marta have such a great marriage is that they exercise together. It’s only a couple of times a week, but in those times they’re reaching for mutual goals (finishing without passing out), cheering each other on, and have something to talk endlessly about over dinner (mainly running shoes and marathons, I would imagine). Hmmm, come to think of it, I’m not really sure why we are friends.
But the biggest benefit is that as they are spending time together. They are staying connected, not missing the ups and downs of their partner.
Missed Signals
I’m kind of oblivious when it comes to cars. I know people (mainly guys, but a few chicks as well) who can wax poetic about carburetors and horsepower all day long. Some people just grow up in car families where Saturdays are spent under the hood, and their DVRs are filled with reruns of American Chopper.
Me? I’m annoyed when I have to decide between different grades of gas.
So when as a 16-year-old I passed my driver’s test (barely—don’t let anyone tell you that a healthy amount of flirting won’t get you anywhere at the DMV), it was time to start looking for my own set of wheels.
After absolute minutes of searching, I found my dream (i.e., cheap) car—a bright orange ’74 Honda.
Now this was a very special car. I bet all you car guys are wondering if this fine piece of machinery was an automatic or stick (see, I do know some insider jargon). Oh no, it was much more special than that. It was a Hondamatic. It had three gears, and when it sounded as though the hamsters were running really fast, that was the time to shift.
So, with my deep love of all things automotive, it really should come as no shock that when it came to taking care of my first car, I could always find better things to do with my time and money (why bother with tiresome things like oil changes when Nordstrom was having its semiannual shoe sale?).
Everything with my Honda was going great until about three months into owning it. That’s when the little red warning light popped on.
I knew enough about cars to realize that the red warning light meant something bad (read: expensive) was going on inside the car. I didn’t have a lot of extra money at the time (remember the shoes), so I figured my best course of action was to ignore it.
