Church Elder Jesse Coburn was the designer of Etna’s Baptist church, officially recognized as the First Baptist Church of Hanover. When the building was completed in 1827, after two years of construction, it ended up costing approximately $1,800. A vestry annex was constructed in 1898–99; and in 1954 a parish house was added—named Trumbull Hall after Etna resident Walter H. Trumbull.

This is a turn-of-the-century view of Etna village boys playing baseball in front of the Baptist church. This common area was originally referred to as a “parade ground,” meaning land for public exercises—military or likewise. It was established in 1829 with $120 of private subscription money; however, only since 1909 has it been owned by the Town of Hanover.
