47. 7 Reasons You Should Turn off Your TV

How much TV do you watch? Do you know? I really didn’t have a clue how much TV I was watching until I sat down one day and worked it out.

How much TV did you watch just this week? Work it out.

How many shows did you watch?

How much time did each one take, including the ads?

What about movies?

YouTube?

The average American watches 34 hours per week, according to a Nielson report. That’s incredible! And that’s only the average. Some people are watching way more.

Why should you cut down? Here’s 7 reasons.

1. TV conditions negativity.

The rule of thumb for any TV program is negativity, whether it’s the news, drama, even comedies. In the UK, most TV shows are known as programs. The listings for these TV shows, on the BBC, Sky TV, or ITV, for instance, are known as programming. This is not far from the truth. As you stare at the screen your brain is being programed to accept all this negativity.

2. TV creates false perceptions and expectations.

Ask any honest movie or TV star and they’ll tell you that the person you see up there on the screen is false, it’s just a persona, it’s not the truth. This fakery creates a distorted perception in the mind of the watcher, which brings me onto my next point.

3. TV creates feelings of inadequacy about your own life.

Some TV shows create impossible-to-live-up-to expectations for ourselves. They are delusions. When we see these perfect people, their perfect lives, and the perfect settings in which they live, it’s very natural to make comparisons with your own life. It doesn’t take much for you to draw the conclusion that you and your life are lacking, causing feelings of inadequacy.

4. TV can normalize bad habits and poison your beliefs.

How many references do you see and hear on the Television about alcohol? When you don’t see alcohol as a problem, you probably don’t notice just how many times every day alcohol is mentioned on your TV in one form or another. This constant flow of propaganda has an influence on your mind. When you see the ‘normal’ drinking, it reinforces that behavior in as normal.

TV is also full of negative stereotypes - the fat person, the socially inept person, the stupid person. These people are sneered at and are always the butt of jokes.

And the news? What’s new about the news? Nothing! It’s the same old stuff served up on a different day. It’s all about death and destruction, problems and pain. Very rarely is there ever good news. There is plenty of good news in the world; why is that hardly ever reported? Because it doesn’t sell newspapers or pay for ad slots.

The news of the world has become a form of gruesome entertainment that taints your perception of life. There will always be another disaster, another death, another form of pain that you can’t do anything about. That’s life. It’s been life from the very beginning. I’m not
