Undercuts (Reliefs)

Undercuts should be avoided unless absolutely necessary. They may be used only when thread runout on external and internal applications cannot be tolerated due to space limitations.

External Threads

Generally, an internally threaded part is counterbored to clear the incomplete threads of the mating part when it must assemble close to a shoulder. When the design does not permit the internally threaded part to be counterbored, the external thread may be undercut as shown in Table 8-2. External threads should not be undercut in sizes smaller than no. 4 (0.112 nominal diameter). Values for external thread undercuts are specified in Table 8-2. Table 8-2.
