Gabriel

Jane stiffened beside me, and I wrapped my fingers around hers, offering her my support for whatever was about to happen. It warmed my heart when she leaned into me a bit.

I looked around the parlor, noting the antique furniture and rugs, and walls of shelves filled with leather covered books, family pictures, and various magical paraphernalia. The whole house, well mansion really, was humming with magic. It made my demon side slightly uneasy.

Jane’s mother gave her an intense look, took a deep breath, and said, “I never liked being a witch. It always made me feel like a freak. Having power scared me.”

“What are you talking about, Mom?” Jane asked. “You said the witchcraft genes skipped you.”

“I lied.”

Jane gasped in unison with her three cousins.

“But...”

Pat held up her hand. “Please Jane, just let me get this all out, then I promise I’ll answer all your questions.”

Jane leaned into me a little more, and I released her hand so I could wrap my arm around her shoulder, offering comfort. She snuggled closer.

“This sounds like that old TV show with that witch who wiggles her nose,” Pepper observed. “She had a husband who hated witchcraft too.”

“When you were still just a kid I could tell that you had magic in you,” Pat continued. “I knew it would only get stronger when you got older. I was freaking out, thinking that your father would disown you. Disown both of us. I didn’t want to lose him, especially not over a power that I didn’t like and never wanted. So, I, um, invited Sage to come visit us at our house in Texas. I knew she’d have her grimoire with her, her book of magic spells, and I was determined to find a way to protect you.”

She took a shaky breath. “I waited until Sage took Cami to the park and then I found a magic suppression spell and I, well, I deactivated your magic to make you a normal.”

“You did what?” Jane gasped in outrage. “How dare you make that decision for me!”

“I did what I thought was best at the time,” she whispered, her eyes shiny with tears. “I didn’t want you to grow up feeling like a freak the way I did. And I didn’t want you to lose your father.”

“Mom!”

Pat took a deep breath. “In order to keep the spell strong,
