Aiden

I stared at the phone on the table. It was emitting the loud beeping of a terminated call. I woodenly placed the handle back in its cradle and looked up at my mother in disbelief. Her jaw hung slack, and Ami and Mia, Tremaine’s twin daughters, stood beside her with identical expressions of shock and horror.

That was the third phone call I had made today, looking for Melody. Melody’s phone was disconnected, and the bakery told me she’d left months ago. So I’d called Jasper. If anyone knew where she was, it would be her best friend. Jasper had been cold but polite until I’d asked her where Melody was. Then she had unleashed a torrent of abuse. I hadn’t known Jasper’s vocabulary was that extensive. Melody had told her enough about what had happened for Jasper to have a very strong opinion of my behaviour, and she’d threatened me with bodily harm if I ever found Melody.

My mother cleared her throat.

“That was… educational. Ami, Mia, I never want to hear you repeating what you just heard.”

“Yes, Grandma.”

It was eerie how they answered at the same time. I would have preferred to make these calls in private, but since what we were politely calling my breakdown, I wasn’t permitted to be alone. At least one member of my family was with me at all times. Even though I had been cleared by the council-approved psychologist, my family still worried.

“Did you know she loved you?” Mum asked.

I opened my mouth to answer, but my mother held up her hand. “Actually, no. Don’t answer that. I’d like to maintain the delusion that you aren’t a total idiot, despite the fact that you are here instead of with her.”

“Mum.”

“Don’t you Mum me, Aiden Timothy Gunnerson.”

I flinched. The use of my full name expressed how deeply I had disappointed her.

“You are supposed to find your woman, love her, and live happily ever after. Instead, you screwed things up so monumentally that it is a very real possibility that you’ll go rogue. You have no idea what it’s like to overhear people discussing how they might need to kill your son!”

She shoved away from the table and left the room. The twins, who sat opposite me, rested their chins on their hands, elbows on the table, and stared at me in silence. I had only met them a few months ago and was still learning how to tell them apart.

“Dad said you were smart, brilliant at what you do. He told us how proud of you the whole family is. I guess it doesn’t matter how old they are when it comes to girls; guys are dumb.”

“Ami, you’re supposed to sugarcoat things like that, so you don’t damage the fragile male ego.” That solved the question of which was which. Ami was on the left, and Mia was on the right.

“Mia, if Uncle Aiden has any ego left after that phone call, it will be a miracle.”

“Twin menaces. How does your father survive?”

“He tends to roll his eyes a lot.
