Chapter Six
Gray hands smeared with dirt, old blood, and rot reached for Riley through flakes of falling snow. They grabbed for him with fingers seeping pus and gore-crusted fingernails that curved like talons. Riley zigzagged through the press of walkers, bouncing to stay light on his feet so they couldn’t manage a solid grip on his clothes or his backpack. Ducking high, then low, he dodged gaping mouths and yellowed fingernails that promised infection with the slightest scratch as he ran as fast as he could through the storm’s accumulation that had massed since the day before.
The smell of putrid meat and decay turned his stomach. He choked back that morning’s breakfast of granola bars, because he couldn’t afford to throw up. He had to keep moving, had to follow Graham.
He definitely didn’t have to notice the faces. No, he didn’t need to see the greasy, matted hair of the brunette still wearing her waitress uniform, and he certainly hadn’t paid any attention to the city cop, hat perched on the crown of his head though half of his skull and most of one cheek had been eaten away.
Riley didn’t see those things, and they were things. They weren’t his neighbors or former customers. They weren’t friends, acquaintances, or even people. Not anymore.
Until he and Graham broke free of the massed zombies, they were targets.
He swung his bat like he was still Anderson High’s most reliable contact hitter. Crack! The cop’s skull caved, the thicker congealed blood of an older zombie bubbling from scalp and shattered bone rather than the more dangerous gory spatter of the freshly undead. A gust of wind picked up the cop’s hat and sent it flying down the street like a ground ball headed for third. Riley weaved through the crowd of infected, rolling his shoulder to dislodge the tug on his pack, and swinging the motherfucking bat at whatever was closest.
They were all close.
But Graham was right. They punched through the crowd of walkers fast.
He and Graham ran faster. Up the street, snow clinging to their feet like wet cement with each plodding, skidding step. Spaced farther apart now, zombies moved slower. They were easier to maneuver around without the need for Graham to lift his crowbar or Riley to wield his bat.
They escaped and hoped to God their extra layers of clothes protected them from contagions in blood spatter reaching vulnerable bare skin.
He and Graham made good time, reaching the corner in a minute. They turned, jogging parallel to the building they’d just vacated to realign themselves in the direction of the park.
Riley’s heart stopped when he spotted walkers pushed against the gate at the center of the block. Dozens upon dozens. Maybe even a hundred. A swarm in the making. He and Graham would never make it through that mass of hungry, infected undead without bites and scratches, no matter how hard Riley’s bat hit or how ferociously Graham swung his crowbar.
Relief dizzied him when Graham cut through the congested street and
