“You can’t be serious?” Adriana glared at Gunner.

Just when she thought she couldn’t get more frustrated with him. First his inattention and now he wanted her to pack up and leave. Gabby and Caitlyn had just arrived less than twenty-four hours ago. She wasn’t about to go anywhere.

“I’m not going to run from Mateo if that’s what your plan is. If he shows up, and we don’t know for sure that he will, then I’ll face the threat even if it means leaving with him to protect all of you. Running won’t stop him from looking for me.”

Gunner gripped her shoulders lightly. “Babe, think about it. Mateo is coming and he won’t be coming by himself. I can’t chance you might get killed in the crossfire.”

“You don’t seem too worried about the others. Anyone could be caught in the gunfire. It’s me he’s after. If I’m here, then I have a better chance of stopping him. Maybe I can reason with him.”

“Reason with him?” Gunner laughed incredulously.

He stepped back and paced the small area between the kitchen and the living area. His boots thudded heavily off the scarred wood, attesting to his agitation. Was she scared of Mateo? Hell, yes. But what Adriana feared more was, if she left them to stand against Mateo and his army, someone else would lose their life, and that she couldn’t live with.

When Gunner had come to the cabin before sunup, he’d asked Gabby and Caitlyn to give them a little privacy. Adri wouldn’t have cared if they’d stayed. As far as she was concerned, Gunner could damn well say what he had to say in front of them. But his asking her to pack her belongings had taken her by surprise. Gunner was delusional, though, if he thought for a moment Mateo would not continue to look for them. He’d likely have his soldiers slaughter everyone left behind while he continued his hunt.

Gunner stopped his pacing, his warm eyes holding hers hostage. If she didn’t know better, she’d swear he felt much the same way about her that she did him. “Mateo isn’t after them. It’s you he wants, babe, and I’m not about to allow him to take you, not again. Or worse, kill you for disobeying. Have you thought of that? Don’t underestimate him.”

He had a point. Adri couldn’t help but remember the young man who’d lent her his cell. The bloody image was forever burned in her brain. Gunner was correct, she couldn’t rule out Mateo doing the same thing to her. Maybe the best thing she could do for everyone would be to disappear in the hope he’d leave everyone else alone in his quest to find her.

And that meant Gunner as well.

If he got caught in Mateo’s crossfire, she might as well step in front of one of Mateo’s bullets because Adri no longer wanted to live without the man standing before her. She loved him with her whole being, even if she’d yet to utter the words.
