CHAPTER 13

Julia scribbled a note to herself in the big, spiral-bound book she’d been using since the beginning of the semester and sat back in her desk chair, tilting her head against the headrest. She’d skipped breakfast, which she was sure she would regret in a couple of hours; but she had stashed a few granola bars in her desk, so at least there would be something for her to eat between when her first class ended and when she got her lunch break.

How is it possible that we figured nothing out all during winter break? It had been weeks, and Julia was starting to think that there was some kind of active campaign against her and Dylan figuring out what was going on in their own world, in the political climate of the council. No matter who she’d talked to, she didn’t seem to be any closer to understanding why it was that certain families—air and water-aligned—apparently were so eager to have her join their ranks, nor why it was so important for her to choose a family before summer came.

She had even asked Ewan, point-blank, why she was suddenly getting offers; he had said that she should consider herself lucky that they’d only gotten to the point of offers—and that no one had tried anything like what they did with Dylan the year before.

Dylan hadn’t managed to find anything out either; they’d even separated at more than one party during the holiday season, attempting to divide and conquer, and all that had gotten Julia was another offer from another air-aligned family, interested in her name and reputation. That one was not nearly as tempting as the first: if she would ally with the Johnson family, she would receive a large sum of money, and a house in her own name; but she would have to ally with them immediately, and the bonding wouldn’t be put off.

Dylan had—Julia knew, because he’d told her—received an offer of his own, and on his own merits: if he would bond with a mate from the Nicene family, he would be heir to their fortune in the recording industry. Julia had been startled at first, but then realized it made as much sense as her first offer; it wasn’t just her these families were after, but Dylan as well.

Someone is trying, very hard, to stitch together some kind of influence, she had decided. But apart from what she’d done and who she was related to, Julia had no influence; certainly, she didn’t think that most of her grandmother’s friends cared much about her beyond their hopes that she would choose a water-aligned mate to satisfy the council and get to work producing children who were either air or water-aligned.

The thought of being relegated to a kind of dynastic broodmare gave Julia a bone-deep chill; but she had to think that it had been like that—somewhat at least—for her grandmother. Even for her mother—or at it would have been, if she hadn’t decided to go her own way.
