EIGHT

Jim Dozier

AT 5:30 P.M. on December 17, 1981, the doorbell rang at Major General James Dozier’s penthouse apartment in Verona, Italy. This was unusual—visitors were supposed to call up from the street entrance before gaining entrance to the building. And Dozier, as one of three U.S. generals stationed in northern Italy at the time, was supposed to be careful about security.

Judy, Dozier’s wife of twenty-five years, had just gotten dinner started. She was sitting at the table with him, drinking a glass of red wine, when they heard the bell.

“This makes me uncomfortable,” she said. “Maybe you shouldn’t.”

But Dozier was already on his feet. A West Point graduate, he’d survived a year in Vietnam and had the bullet wounds to show for it. After that, it was easy to shrug off fear. Besides, as he frequently pointed out, he was an unlikely target. That wasn’t just simple modesty talking. As a senior official at NATO, Dozier had nothing to do with the solely American nuclear arsenal that had stacked up across Europe during the cold war. Even within NATO’s Verona headquarters, he played a quiet, administrative role. Plus, the terrorist violence that had rocked Italy for more than a decade hadn’t jumped to Verona. The city, with its romantic Romeo and Juliet overtones, was considered a safe zone.
