It went on for a while. It was hot and I felt dizzy. I knew I wouldn’t be allowed to get up, so I stayed at the altar, feeling more and more disorientated.
I started to feel very sick, and someone must have noticed. Actually, I think they would have been looking out for it because I would have been given the wine deliberately for this purpose. If I was ill, I could be cared for. If I was cared for, I would feel safe. If I felt safe, they could ramp things up.
‘Little Sister is unwell,’ someone said. ‘Send for the Mother.’
An older woman came towards me and took me in her arms. She carried me to another room where she sponged my forehead and soothed me. Women were often used like this, I would come to realise. In the Kirk, they had traditional, caring roles. My own mother had never been like that – this was a novelty for me.
There was another man there, too, who continually said, ‘Take care of Little Sister, Mother. She means a great deal to us. She is one of the chosen ones.’ They made me feel very safe. Just as I was feeling a little better, the man passed me a goblet full of a red liquid. ‘Drink this,’ he said. I did. It made me feel worse.
‘She needs to be bathed,’ said Mother. ‘Take Little Sister to the bathroom.’
A warm bath was drawn for me and I was treated with kindness. Mother washed me and cared for me. I felt like I belonged but, even then, I was always trying to keep something reserved as I could never trust anyone totally.
After I had been washed, I was taken back through to the original room. It looked as if no one had moved. I was led to the altar and the chanting began:
Thank you Lord for the return of Little Sister.
Thank you for the care you show your chosen ones.
Thank you for being all seeing.
Thank you for being all knowing.
We are in your debt, Lord.
We must never reveal your secrets, Lord.
We must do your work in silence, Lord.
We must never betray you.
