A WALK IN THE TWILIGHT

“Hello, Mr. and Mrs. Greene,” Celeste greeted her in-laws as she sat at the table in the small dining room.

It had been three weeks since she’d seen them. They had been in residence, but it became apparent their religious duties took them out of the house for hours on end. The mansion’s size made it easy for them not to see each other for days. Except for quick snatches of conversation and social trivialities on the go, she had very little interaction with them.

“Hello, Celeste. It’s good to see you today. Sorry we’re eating late,” Mr. Greene said as he sat down across from her smiling. Her father-in-law reminded her of a wrestler, but his kind eyes seemed to have more impact on her than his size. “I see you’re wearing one of your costumes again. You look like a princess from the fairytales. It looks nice.”

Celeste glanced down at her attire as she thanked him. It was an attempt to mimic the dress from the painting of The Arnolfini Portrait. She had of course changed the color of the dress to match her taste. A deep-hued purple, it was lined with yards of black faux fur she had found at a party store some years ago. White faux fur underlined the white underdress. The most difficult part had been the dagging—folding the material, sewing it together, and then cutting it to make it fray as decoratively as in the portrait—but she believe she’d done a good imitation. She didn’t make the horn headdress the same as the portrait. She preferred to match her dress with a divided black hennin, the conical shaped halves to the right and left of her head with a purple linen veil coming to the end of her forehead.

“I don’t know how you do it. Your talent is extraordinary,” he continued, leaning back as Mr. Batcher put a plate of food in front of him.

“Thank you, Mr. Greene. Grandmother Thomas often remarked she believed me to be a prodigy in regards to hand arts.”

“Gonzo’s grandmother was very good at those kinds of things,” Mrs. Greene interjected as she placed a cloth napkin on her lap. “I’m glad she was able to pass her talent on to you. Gonzo would have died of boredom.”

“Is that why you always wear gloves? To protect your hands?”

Celeste waited while Mr. Batcher put the plate in front of her and she thanked him. “I am a parts model.”

“A parts model?” Mr. Greene inquired as he took a sip of water.

“Specifically, I am a hand model. I’d be most pleased to show you my portfolio when you have some time.”

“Wonderful! I’ve never met a hand model before,” Mr. Greene said with pleasure and Celeste found herself warming up to her father-in-law.

Suddenly, her skin became charged, and she knew Solomon had entered the dining room before he called out, “Sorry I’m late,” as he took the seat next to her.

“Hello, my sweet,” he greeted, the pet name completely unexpected just as the kiss he placed on her cheek.
