Soaking up benefits of soaked nuts and seeds

Ideally, you should soak nuts and seeds overnight before adding them to your smoothies because doing so removes the enzyme inhibitors and makes the food easier to digest. (Enzyme inhibitors are a natural coating on every nut and seed that keeps it from sprouting. Eating food with enzyme inhibitors can actually slow down or decrease your ability to fully digest food.) Some nuts taste better after soaking because they lose any bitterness. They usually blend better, too.

Remember: Be sure to rinse the nuts or seeds and drain the water that you soaked them in. Don’t use the soaking water in your smoothie because that water contains the enzyme inhibitors that came off the nuts or seeds.

That said, anything good you’re doing now is better than the bad you were doing before! If you’re not ready to start soaking nuts yet, that’s okay! Just toss them in dried or use raw nut butter instead. Find your own path and pace for making changes and that’s your road to success.
