Another perc alternative uses liquid carbon dioxide (CO2), also used for decaffeinating coffee, which has no reported adverse health risks. In this process, developed by a private company with funding from an EPA contract in 1994, CO2 is captured from existing industrial and agricultural emissions so it does not contribute to global warming. In 2002 Hangers Cleaners, a national chain specializing in CO2 cleaning, won a Most Valuable Pollution Prevention Award from the National Pollution Prevention Roundtable.

There are a few downsides, however. Unlike wet cleaning, the detergents used in CO2 cleaning do contain some volatile organic compounds (VOCs). Also, the cost of buying the CO2 cleaning equipment is nearly double that of buying a wet cleaning system, making the process less financially feasible for small businesses. The higher price may be worth it, though. Consumer Reports found that CO2 cleaners offered the best results in tests for shrinkage, discoloration, and preservation of texture—better than perc-based cleaning.
