So Joni has a temper. Graves took a sip of soda, watching the television, and found himself smiling slightly. So much for the speech he’d practiced all morning, the one about how it wasn’t safe for her to live with him.

He’d woken that morning to see red marks from the tips of his fangs that he’d left on Joni’s delicate skin. He’d never marked a lover before. It had scared the shit out of him.

There was also the fact that Werewolf women healed fast. Bruises from rougher sex faded within an hour. Not on Joni. The marks he’d left on her might last for days or more.

He wasn’t one to nip skin, either. That probably shocked him more than anything else. He kept his mouth closed during sex and his fangs far away from a woman’s flesh. With Joni, he hadn’t resisted the urge, and she’d seemed to love everything he’d done. She was very vocal with her pleasure.

He’s stopped thinking entirely, once he got his hands and mouth on her. His mind had been in a bad place, and she’d let him forget everything while he got lost in her body. The sex was incredible. The fact that she was in his space, ovulating, and hell, she belonged to him…it all made everything scorching hot. The best fuck he’d ever given or gotten. He couldn’t deny that.

Nor could he ignore the fact that he wanted her again. Right now.

At least he hadn’t forgotten to use condoms.

That thought hit him like mental ice water and cooled his desire to go after her in her room. He couldn’t fuck up that way. Micah would make a great father one day. Him, not so much.

He contemplated his past. He and his brother used to be so similar as kids, they got teased about being identical twins born a few years apart. Then, when he was a teen…that attack in the middle of the night happened.

Everything had changed.

Arlis’s parents had been the alpha pair. There’d been no warning. The bastard from another pack who’d led the attack hadn’t issued an alpha challenge. They’d snuck in like assassins, slaughtering anyone they found. One of the first homes they’d hit—after the alpha’s—happened to belong to the father of his future mate. Graves had lost Londa and her entire family.

He became someone else after her death. It was simply how he’d dealt with the grief. Her family was murdered before he was even aware their territory had been invaded. The sound of loud howls and a few gunshots had woken him. At first, he’d assumed a group of humans had come to kill them. They were the ones who used guns to attack the packs.

He’d lost his mind when he’d made it to Londa’s cabin and found her body.

That night, he’d taken his first life. And many more. He’d used his grief and fury to tear apart anyone responsible. By the time the sun had risen, there were no enemies left alive. Their land had been stained red with blood.
