Seventeen

The eruption lifted me off my feet and shot me through the air. Time slowed.

Windows that had still been intact shattered into hundreds of glass daggers. They flew at me, cutting my exposed skin.

Killion morphed in mid-reach for me, his body becoming all fangs and claws and blood red eyes. Not completely vampire, nor dragon, but something in-between. His inner monster took over to protect him, and in essence, me.

I catapulted through the darkness, the fiery ball of the detonation lighting the night, then winking out, leaving the stars overhead reflecting on the shattered jagged panes. My ears throbbed and blood seeped from them, ringing with a high-pitched squeal.

Bones crunched when my back slammed into a giant oak several yards from the cupid, the pain so all-consuming I screamed. The sound seemed distant, muffled to my damaged hearing.

After impact, I dropped to the ground and Killion landed on top of me. The weight and sheer force of his beast knocked the air from my battered lungs, making me shriek again. Dozens of glass knives as big as my hands drove into us. He covered me, the razor sharp weapons embedding themselves deep in his back.

Unable to breathe, to speak, all I could do was lie there. My body and brain were in shock. The echo of the explosion reverberated in my ears and magic like a living thing. I felt frozen, unable to do more than blink.

Even that hurt.

The half-beast did not cry out from the glass in his spine, but his breathing was harsh, ragged. He, too, seemed frozen, unable to move, his gaze pinned on the ground next to my head.

Killion, I whispered mentally, seeking him with my magic. It seemed fragmented and almost…burnt. My mouth tasted of ashes and loss.

His silent agony mingled with mine. I sensed the edginess of his inner beast trying to hold onto the last shreds of his humanity. I prayed he could, because if not, I would become food for his dragon.

Fear creeped along my broken body—not of him, but of what had happened. Katarina. Andy. Ghost. Are they alive?

The deafening silence sent fear sliding through me.

Killion. I pushed a stronger force into it this time. My magic swirled, the fragments melding. My natural healing sputtered, went out, flickered to life again.

Concentrating, I flooded him with all I had. Black spots danced on the edges of my vision and more fiery agony lanced through me, causing me to nearly lose consciousness.

With no warning, Grim Zero burst through the wall I’d secured between us, forcing me to inhale. Raw fire hit my shattered ribs and I regretted sucking in another sharp breath as her magic began to knit bones back together.

The pain! Searing, horrible torment. With oxygen filling my lungs, I issued a feeble sob. The monster’s attention snapped to me. Live, he growled inside my head. A command.

His blood soaked my clothes, mixing with my own. I stared into his eyes and his breathing became harsher, more erratic. I still couldn’t find his magic, yet sensed it was right there.
