VLYSSES S. GRANT

BORN APRIL XXVII MDCCCXXII

DIED JVLY XXIII MDCCCLXXXV

While the tomb looked nearly complete from the outside, the interior stonework had yet to be started. Inside was a sunken chamber for the tomb, and in the rear corners were smaller “trophy rooms.” The previous year, initial estimates on the interior work were undertaken and several materials, including various types of marble and polished granite, were evaluated. In the spring of 1896, Duncan decided that “The entire interior of TOMB should be near as white as possible.”88 Once again, the contract was awarded to Brady. Italian marble was used for the stark interior and was installed by Schneider-Birkenstock Marble Co., which had been subcontracted by Brady. Four allegorical pendentives (interior triangular structures that support a dome atop a square building) were sculpted by Scottish artist J. Massey Rhind. The accomplished sculptor symbolically depicted Grant’s birth, military career, civilian life, and death. Rhind also carved two figures, appropriately representing war and peace, for the front exterior. They represent Grant’s career of military and public service, and between them were engraved the four words that had become his lasting epitaph: Let Us Have Peace.
