TWELVE

Mayor Wallace Boggs had never been so miserable in his entire life. Despite the best rain slicker that money could buy, he was soaked to the skin, chilled to the bone, and madder than hell.

"You mean to say that we've completely lost their tracks!"

"That's right," Marshal Timberman snarled. "What the hell do you expect in this weather! The way it rained the last few days, we're lucky we haven't drowned, let alone lost the tracks."

Boggs roughly jerked his horse to a standstill and piled off into the mud. "Goddamn cinch is loose again," he complained.

No one said anything. Not Ulysses Timberman, who'd already had a belly full of the mayor's constant bitching, and not the dozen hired gunmen, who saw images of Spanish gold dancing before their bloodshot eyes.

"So what are we going to do now!" Boggs demanded. "We got nothing to follow to the Grand Canyon."

Timberman glanced up at the sky, silently cursing the dark, threatening clouds. The hell with it, he thought as he signaled the other riders to dismount. They had not
