Chapter 6

Hindrances of Growth

M any times, both knowingly and unknowingly, as believers we sabotage our own growth and ability to bear fruit. I have seen many believers of all ages cheat themselves out of growth and maturation in the faith and the fruitful results of maturation. This is very sad. Many of these people end up in vicious cycles of defeat—marvelous potential and possibility unharnessed, lives and purposes unfulfilled. The sad reality of this is if they have children, they pass their thought processes to the next generation, not necessarily by their words but by their actions.

Their words say, “Go to school and get a good education so that you can be somebody.” Meanwhile, though, their actions encourage playing the lottery, drinking, partying, and living a frivolous life because of this absolutely ridiculous YOLO (You Only Live Once) philosophy, which is perpetuated by pop-culture celebrities of this present generation. When the parental words and the parental behavior contradict each other, the child is naturally confused. That is why we must learn to identify the hindrances to growth so that we can eliminate them. This is how we will preserve the next generation. Otherwise, they will suffer as a result of our inability to grow and mature.

A major reason Christians do not grow is that they do not see the need for growth. That is a big roadblock to development. They have no desire to work and serve to the full extent of their ability. They develop a spirit of indifference or negligence. Another reason is that, after they develop a certain level of maturity, they stagnate. They become satisfied, thinking no more growth is needed. This belief is satanic in origin because God created everything to grow and develop. The Scriptures teach us that growth is essential, so the notion that one has arrived is biblically false and satanic.

The following list is not all-inclusive. However, if you find yourself suffering from any of the following influences, you may be sabotaging your own growth. This list is meant to help believers identify the areas in their lives that need more work. So if you feel a sense of condemnation come over you, realize that such condemnation is not the work of the Holy Spirit and shake that feeling off in the name of Jesus!

Hindrances to growth

Tradition

One of the major hindrances to growth is traditionalism. “This is how we have always done it” expresses this viewpoint. I have come to define tradition as “a previously successful move of God that has been turned into a ritual.” If we are not vigilant, our traditions can nullify the effectiveness of the Word of God in our lives. Mark 7:13 explains this clearly: “Making the word of God of none effect through your tradition, which ye have delivered: and many such like things do ye.”

The Word of God is seed, as in Luke 8:11. Whenever seed is planted, it is expected to grow. When we allow traditionalism to take the place that the Word of
