Chapter 10

Everything was just wonderful the next day. Melody was happy, and settled quickly after a feed, either to sleep or she was happy to play with her hands or her activity centre while she lay on the rug in the warm room while I worked. My work was easy, and I was so productive I thought that my boss might think I was slacking off on other days in comparison to today. I had even had time to blow dry my hair, and put on some light make-up, things I often never seemed to have time for these days, and I was feeling good. No, it wasn’t just good, it was fantastic. For the first time in a long time, I felt wanted. Wanted and beautiful. Was that why everything seemed so great today, because I felt great?

I shrugged my shoulders. Maybe, maybe not, but I was going to enjoy today while it lasted. It was even an unseasonably warm day, the sun was shining and there wasn’t any cold wind blowing, so I took a quick break. I had started working early because Melody had woken me up early, so by ten I felt like I had done almost my day’s work. I wrapped Melody up and took her for a quick walk around the block. She fell asleep in the pram, so I just wheeled the pram into the hallway and left it there while I raced back to my laptop. Melody wouldn’t come to any harm sleeping in her pram, when she woke up I would move her, but I wasn’t going to risk waking her up when she was as deep in slumber as she was. The only dark spot on my day, was that Blair wasn’t here yet. But then that dark spot was offset by the thought that maybe I could convince him to spend the night.

As if my musings about Blair had conjured him up, I heard a knock at the door. Not even thinking about why Blair would knock when he had a key, or even stopping to check the peephole, I flung open the door, the broad smile dying on my face when I saw Darren, who turned to me and smirked when he heard the door open.

“You’ve done well for yourself, old girl. That shouldn’t be a surprise, though, should it?” Before I could gather my wits, Darren shouldered past me and walked into the house, stopping when he saw the pram.

I turned away from the door, not even bothering to close it, as I didn’t intend for Darren to stay. I stepped towards him quickly, afraid he would wake Melody up, or even worse, touch her. I didn’t want his hands on her, as irrational as that was, but if he had got his way, she wouldn’t be here now. Blair cared more for her, and he hadn’t fathered her. I insinuated myself in between the pram and Darren, and turned to him angrily, trying to keep my angry voice to a low whisper.
