Chapter Sixteen

After the longest day of their lives, the WONE volunteers were shuttled to a budget hotel who’d donated their rooms to relief workers. The bus was completely silent as they made the twenty-minute drive into the neighboring county.

Sweaty, dirty, and worn out, most people slept the entire ride. Madison had lasted less than five minutes before she crossed her arms over her chest, turned her head to the side, and started snoring. Valentina bit the inside of her lip instead of smiling at the sight of her sleeping face. She turned her head to look out the window instead.

As soon as they arrived at the hotel, they were given room keys and shown to the free hot buffet they were encouraged to visit. Only a couple of people decided their hunger was stronger than the need for a shower.

Valentina and Madison trudged toward their block of rooms on the first floor along with the rest of their crew. As people stopped at their assigned rooms, they continued until they were the last ones left. Their minor celebrity status had been rewarded with the two rooms facing the end of the hall rather than stacked along the walkway.

“Enjoy your shower,” Madison said with a wink before disappearing into her room.

Valentina forced her tired body through the door and dropped her duffle bag on the bed. Every aching muscle in her body screamed as she peeled her filthy clothes off her sunburnt body. The cool water was heavenly as it cascaded off her sore body. Valentina nearly cried at the satisfaction of washing her hair.

When she was tired of standing, she shut the water off and leaned against the cold tile for a moment. Usually, she’d be grossed out by touching anything in a hotel, but her perspective had been corrected by recent events.

Careful to minimize contact with the skin on her upper body that had burned even through her T-shirt, she slipped on a camisole and soft pajama shorts. With her short, wet hair in a towel, she was about to collapse into bed when she heard a knock on what she’d mistakenly believed was a closet.

“It’s me,” a voice said through the locked door.

The sound made Valentina’s heart skip a beat. What is she doing? she wondered as her fingers moved of their own accord to unlock the deadbolt.

Madison appeared on the other side of the door, standing in her own room dressed in sweats and a t-shirt as she reclined against the doorframe like a cool guy from the 50’s. All that was missing was the leather jacket and slicked-back hair. Instead, her hair was all tucked into what looked like a slouchy gray beanie.

“What do you know. Adjoining rooms,” Madison said with a smirk before her eyes registered the state of Valentina’s skin. “Holy crap, what happened to you?” she shrieked as her eyes scanned Valentina’s red arms and neck in disbelief.

“An Argentinian father,” she replied with a wince and a chuckle.

“I’ll be right back,” Madison said before disappearing into her bathroom.
