4. Please read the book excerpt below and answer the questions that follow.

“Having your life turned upside down is brutally devastating, but it can help shake loose some emotionally unhealthy issues that need tending.” (p. 85)

Doing the work of building boundaries while rebuilding the areas of your life that have been devastated is nothing short of warfare. In both your heart and your soul. But we serve a God who has not left us to fight this battle on our own. Read each Bible verse below and write the name of the gate it mentions in the blank.

Nehemiah 3:28 The __________________ Gate

Next, we come to the Horse Gate, the place near the king’s stables. In times of war this is where the soldiers would come. For believers today, the Horse Gate is a symbol of the spiritual battle every believer faces. When Christ returns, he’ll set up His reign for eternity. In the meantime, spiritual battles are real, and the Horse Gate immediately follows the Water Gate because the sword of the Spirit is God’s Word (Ephesians 6:17). We don’t need horses and physical weapons today; we battle the enemy of our souls through time in the Word and time on our knees.

Nehemiah 3:29 The __________________ Gate

When we’re feeling weary from a battle, the East Gate is the next stop around the wall of Jerusalem, and I am so grateful, because the East Gate is imbued with Ezekiel’s prophetic words. In a vision Ezekiel saw the glory of the Lord depart from the temple and leave the city through the East Gate (Ezekiel 10:18–19). Then Ezekiel had another vision. He saw the glory of the Lord returning to Jerusalem one day, and when He returns, He’ll come through the East Gate (Ezekiel 43:1–5). The East Gate is a symbol of hope for the future we have in Christ.

Nehemiah 3:31 The __________________ Gate

The last gate around the wall of Jerusalem is the Inspection Gate. When a soldier returned from battle, he gave a report to the king, who’d reward him for his service. That’s going to be us someday. We’re going to stand before our King and give an account of our lives. We’re going to tell Him about the battles we fought and the valleys we trudged through. And we’re going to fall to our knees and cry, “Thank You. It’s all because of You, the Lamb of God who takes away my sin.”
