A Few Hours Later

IT WAS A LITTLE BIT AFTER MUM HAD DONE HER traditional morning routine, and while Tom was up and about getting ready for school, and Grey Arthur looked like a zombie. Not the type of actual Zombie ghost that populates Africa and certain states in America, not patchwork skin and rotten teeth, not terrible smell and sluggish thought, but the type that you see in bad horror films. He moaned, and groaned, and dragged his feet, and his hair appeared even more ghostly than usual. It looked like a wig from a charity shop, a wig recovered from the side of the road, a wig that had seen better days, and to top off the look, dark puffy circles clung to his eyes. Grey Arthur, it seems, didn’t cope well with lack of sleep.

“I thought ghosts didn’t have to sleep?” asked Tom, scarcely able to hide his amusement.

Grey Arthur yawned. “In the past I didn’t bother. Not before I met you. Now I think I’ve gotten a bit too used to it.” He paused, thinking, and then frowned. “My eyes feel itchy.”

“Why don’t you just go back to bed, then? It’s not like you’re coming into school with me today. Not until we know that the plan worked.”

“Not really,” agreed Tom. “I’m going to be heading into school with Mildred, to test out whether the plan worked. If it did, then all’s well, and she can fetch you and the other Invisible Friends back into school. If it didn’t, then at least Kate will only be seeing Mildred again, rather than you with your …” Tom remembered last night’s conversation and gave Arthur a friendly grin. “… grey skin and lopsided ears.”

“What can I say?” Grey Arthur chuckled tiredly. “I’m a very ghostly ghost.”

Tom turned to the mirror and began carefully doing up his tie. “I’m really impressed you managed to replace the necklace. I wasn’t sure if Tike would even be able to track down a copy in time, and so to have managed to slip it back into Kate’s room is a pretty cool trick. Course, it doesn’t make us any closer to tracking down the Terrible Theo, but still, one less thing to worry about. I mean, that’s if it worked. Which I hope it has.” Tom frowned and turned to face Grey Arthur. “Does the writing on
