Chapter Seven

A knock on their door woke Declan far too soon after such a night of sport. With great reluctance, he left the comforts of bed and woman, pulling his jeans back on for the sake of decency. When he opened the door, he came face to face with the dragon lawman from yesterday. He seemed excited. Declan tensed. He hoped for good news. Sienna would be frustrated beyond measure if the trail had gone cold.

He didn’t want to undo all of his good work from the night before.

“Our wolves caught Wade’s scent near Carlsbad Caverns,” the sheriff said. “They also sniffed out demon scent not native to this plane or planet.”

“What can you tell us about these caverns?” Sienna asked as she stumbled out of the bedchamber while tugging on her boots.

“Well, ma’am, they’re a system of caves outside of our magical wards in a National Park. We get some riffraff hiding out there from time to time. Close enough to Magic to cause mischief but far enough away to fly under the radar. You’ll need to go into the caves as a human, but your dragon form is small enough for a shift. Tight squeeze, but you can manage if you need it.”

Sienna nodded. She had her thinking face on, no doubt formulating a plan for their rescue mission.

It was high time he contributed to that plan. “How many demons did your wolves detect?”

Theo pulled out one of those small metal boxes that the humans in this dimension used to communicate. What was it called again? Smart phone?

“At least three, maybe more. Two are likely powerful, though the wolves couldn’t get a sense of their specific powers.”

Sienna nodded. “Wade told me they’re nearly indestructible, impervious to heat and conventional weapons. Difficult to pierce their flesh. They have excellent hearing, average vision, they can’t fly but can transport as long as they can see where they’re going.”

“What are their weaknesses?” Declan asked, flexing his fingers. He could put his muscles to use along with his wits. With proper weapons and a plan, surely they could defeat the demons.

“It’s difficult for them to transport and latch onto rapidly moving objects,” she said, tapping into that marvelous mind of hers to sort through stored information. “They’re vulnerable to ice.”

“Tough to find in the desert,” the sheriff said. “But the gnomes might have something you can use.”

Sienna scoffed. “The lorry drivers? They didn’t seem particularly friendly or helpful, especially to ‘our kind.’”

The sheriff smiled. “It’s not personal. They don’t trust anyone. Suspicious conspiracy theorists to a man—or woman,” he added when Sienna scowled at him. “They think the mundanes—or magical creatures here in town—are going to destroy civilization. I hear they’re stockpiling supplies for the end times. Offer something the little preppers can use for that, and they’ll be on board.”

“Preppers?” Declan asked.

“Sorry, Earth lingo,” the sheriff said. “It means people who are preparing to survive the end of civilization, like in the event of a war or natural disaster.”

“Or demon attack.” Declan’s regard for the intelligence of the creatures went up a notch.
