Chapter Eight
Lizâs mind was racing as she headed for the kitchenâwhich was no way to eat. Sheâd make herself sick if she didnât calm down. Sheâd regurgitate everything and thenâ¦then sheâd starve.
So she forced herself to concentrate on what she was doing, to count her small stash, to load and unload the refrigerator, to think about whether it was better to boil some water and heat up her breakfast, or drink it cold. In the end, she decided she was too impatient, too hungry to wait.
Cold it was, then.
Sheâd barely sunk her fangs into the first bag, when the sound of a fist pounding on her door made her jump. A growl rumbled in her chest when the full impact hit her. A fist. Pounding. On her custom made. Specially ordered. Dutch door. Damn it!
Liz gulped down another mouthful, shoved the rest of her breakfast back into the fridge. And hurried back to the doorâbefore the damn fool had it off its hinges. She was tempted to tear a strip of molding off one of the walls and use it to stake whoever this was through the heart. If that didnât make her point for her, nothing would. A white rage crackled within her, burning along her nerves like electricity along faulty wiring, arcing and sizzling through her veins.
It felt surprisingly good.
She felt powerful, suddenly; confident, strong. If this was what being feral was like, then, why in the world was she fighting it? Hell yeah, baby. Bring. It. On.
And, yes, there was a small part of her that was dismayed by her anger, that was terrified by how out-of-control she was feeling. That wanted nothing more than to throw herself back into the safety of Jasonâs arms, to leave town with him now and head out to San Francisco. Where was the bad? Even if Conrad did kill her as soon as she got there, at least sheâd get to see something of the coast before she died.
But another part of her welcomed the anger and considered herself justifiably furious. Had she not asked Jason to leave her alone? Why did he think it was okay to disregard her request for time and space in which to work? She did not owe him her time. Not even a micro-second. And he absolutely had no right to assault her door!
Sheer curtains billowed cloud-like around her as she pulled the door open, practically strangling her. She batted them away. âIf you donâtââ she began, stopping again as sunlight streamed in and she recognized her brother standing on the small landing, haloed in sunlight.
That lightâye gods! She raised a hand to at least block some of it. Why was Rob here? Why now? What had she ever done to her brother to make him want to blind her?
Well, other than turn him into a vampire. But that was ages ago. He couldnât seriously be holding that against her now? Maybe the sunlight would be even worse on the West Coast? Maybe, she should rethink her itinerary and head north instead? She could move to the Arctic Circle.
