CHAPTER 11

Brian was bleeding all over the front-seat area of the Bentley. At least the passenger’s side. Each breath he took was eclipsed with more pain, and the slightest movement of his body felt like something was ripping him at the rib cage.

Al said, “Are you ignoring me, Marv?”

Marv finally said, “No, sir. I just need to watch my surroundings.”

Needles saw his legs now. His shoes were not the sort to be running in. She knew, though, that if Brian wasn’t already dead, a shot to the gunman’s leg would certainly get Brian killed.

“Well, can’t you watch your surroundings while you get me out of this fucking trunk?”

For three seconds Needles saw the gunman’s head and neck. That was all she needed. She aimed both guns again and doubled-up the head damage. When she heard Marv’s body crumple to the concrete floor, she got up and rushed toward the Bentley. “Brian, you okay?” She saw all the blood inside and knew it was Brian’s.

He was breathing and conscious but he didn’t answer her.

She was about to cry but held her composure. “I need for you to get in the car correctly so I can drive you to the hospital. I’m not strong enough to move you, so I need your help.”

Brian began turning over slowly while she started swinging his legs up and inside the car. He was grunting and puffing his jaws, not wanting her to hear him holler again. He finally struggled to say, “I…got it from…here.”

She felt relieved to hear him say something. She leaned across him and unlocked the trunk. Then, Needles stepped over the white gunman’s body and hurried toward the rear of the car.

Al looked up at her with the saddest eyes, his ankles and hands still cuffed. “I helped you guys out. Please don’t shoot me.”

Needles shot him five times then slammed the trunk closed. Within seconds, she was backing the car out of the body shop and was talking to the car’s navigation system. Turn-by-turn directions to the nearest hospital in Lansing would speed things up without her having to drive too fast.

Brian said, “I love you…woman. You know that?” and it hurt like hell to say it. Physically hurt.

She said, “You’re only saying that because I’m not charging you for gas.” She smiled. “I love you, too, Brian.”

He reclined his seat a little, taking some pressure off his side.

Needles grabbed a cell phone from her front pocket. “Can you take all of your ID out and give it to me?”

He said, “No. Hurts…too bad.”

“I’ll get it when I have to stop. Just try to relax. I’m going to call the hospital and tell them I’m bringing a guy in who fell from a ladder and onto the corner of a table. That’ll keep them from getting the police involved until I’m long gone. I have to get rid of this damn car. We got a body in the trunk and your DNA everywhere up front.”

He winced then looked down at the blood on his clothes.
