Chapter 11

Bamboo was a tall black man with a low haircut. He did not look like the typical Jamaican. He was well-dressed but only wore an expensive watch as jewelry. With creases at his eyebrows, he looked mean. Even when he was in a good mood. He saw the police cruiser at the car wash ahead, but it meant nothing. He’d seen it there plenty mornings.

As soon as the Infinity came to a stop, Brian walked up to the driver’s window displaying those bullshit credentials again. “FBI. Turn your car off and step out of the vehicle, sir.”

Bamboo did not lower the window. “What is dis bote?”

“The murder of Monica Hughes. Rowland Morris can fill you in if your cells are not far apart.”

That did it. Bamboo shifted to first gear and his car violently skirred out of the parking space, tires vigorously rubbing like large erasers against the street.

Brian jumped back and went for his gun. He fired one shot, shattering Bamboo’s rear window. He wasn’t trying to kill him, just trying to make him wreck the car. The second shot opened a taillight but the driver was picking up speed now.

Brian sprinted after the car but knew he would not be steady enough to hit a tire.

Office Martini threw on his overhead flashers as the Infinity blew by. He stuck his head out the window and shouted to Agent Ergan, “There’s room in the back if you hurry!”

Brian rushed up to the police car without giving it a second thought. He opened the door and threw himself inside the backseat area.

Officer Martini sped away from the carwash before his rear door was closed.

Brian got the door shut then realized there was no handle to use to let himself out. More than that, the Plexiglas partition between him and the officers indicated that he’d just turned himself in. “Can you lower this window from up there?”

Officer Fowler said, “No way. Consider yourself in custody for a moment.”

Brian leaned back as if resigned.

Officer Martini grabbed his radio to call in the pursuit.

Brian said, “I need you to stay off the radio until we get him detained because his partner’s house is about to be raided a few blocks away.

Martini released the radio, but Fowler frowned and said, “We’re gonna get chewed out for this.”

Brian said, “Better than your ass being suspended or fired for obstruction of justice. Bartrum is slowing down. Drop your window and take out one of his tires.”

Fowler said, “Shooting at a fleeing suspect, or even his car, would be more hot water for us.”

Brian shook his head. Fucking authority didn’t have the authority to do a damn thing. “One shot coming. Brace yourselves.” He blasted out his window on the driver’s side with a single shot, rattling all ear drums inside the police cruiser. Then, he extended the upper part of his body out of the window.

Bamboo glanced at his rearview mirror 6 times in 10 seconds. His car had skated through the Galvez intersection and had even dashed past Miro and Tonti Street.
