Chapter 6
The Power War
Who Are You in Agreement With?
I like power. I am sure you enjoy a bit of it, too. In our world, having power is seen as a good thing—it means that you are not weak, that you have control over certain things. Since the beginning of time, the quest for power has been at the heart of virtually every conflict. Satan fell because he wanted more of God's power for himself. Humanity fell for basically the same reason. Nations have fallen and continue to fall in the ever-shifting balance of power throughout this world.
As an all-powerful God, our heavenly Father is the author and creator of power. Therefore, it is perfect and good within itself. The problem with power is when it falls into the wrong hands — or hands that become corrupted by its allure. We characterize such people as "drunk with power," "power-hungry" or having an "insatiable lust for power." Yet these are often the people who change the course of history.
We are currently in a time in our nation when certain individuals are vying for the power to shape our history.
One of the strongest fights for such influence is now taking place in our courtrooms. Author Mark Sutton agrees with this assessment in Walk Through the Wall, America, an eye-opening, key prophetic book for this hour. One of Sutton's many excellent points is that our judicial system is quickly becoming out of control with its leading figures' unrelenting, unchecked pursuit of power and authority. "By making constitutional law, federal judges can bypass democracy and, in many respects, rule America from the judicial bench," Sutton writes. "Some federal judges have repeatedly and without any fear of consequences effectively amended the U.S. Constitution for more than 50 years. The resulting judge-made constitutional amendments are an unconstitutional act, because judges are not permitted by the Constitution to make constitutional law."1
How are federal judges getting away with this? The checks and balances system on which our American government is based keeps Congress's and the President's power in check via the U.S. Supreme Court. However, there are very few checks in place to keep judges from redefining and amending some of the core elements of our nation's laws, which is especially likely when legislation is poorly written. Judges must clarify and interpret laws, and when laws are ambiguous, judges sometimes make decisions that rightfully belong to the Legislative Branch (which represents the people). The Executive Branch has the power to appoint judges, but it is extremely difficult to remove a judge once he or she has been sworn in. This means that if a handful of judges begin to overreach their Constitutional powers, there is little that can be done to stop them.
A perfect example, as Sutton points out, is what is now termed the "separation of church and state." Today, the majority of people in our society simply accept this as a Constitutional doctrine: Government and religion must be kept separate. The fact of the matter is that our nation's forefathers consistently melded the two.
