Strategic-Level Spiritual Warfare
In the countryside of England, about a dozen people, followers of contemporary apostles and prophets, drive the main roads coming into their small town. They exit their cars carrying three-foot wooden stakes that have been inscribed on the sides with verses of Scripture. They stop at each road, say a prayer, and then drive a stake into the ground. They believe their actions will prevent demons from influencing their town.

In Southern California, a small team of people are climbing to the top of the Hollywood Hills, overlooking the famous Hollywood sign. Led by an influential apostle, they recite the words of a “divorce decree” between the region and a powerful demon they call Baal. They pray to “uproot the perversion” of Hollywood’s entertainment industry. Following their prayer, they feel a swift breeze in their midst and believe it is a signal that God heard their prayer and is “cleansing away the perversion.”75

In Nepal, a team that has taken special training in Alpine climbing is scaling Mount Everest, the world’s highest mountain. The team has named their expedition Operation Ice Castle. Their mission is to find the throne of a high-ranking demon they call the Queen of Heaven. They believe this demon rules over the 10/40 Window—the region of the world situated between the latitudes of 10 degrees and 40 degrees north, encompassing North Africa, the Middle East, and sections of Asia to Japan. At 20,000 feet, the team attempts to directly assault the evil spirit by building an ice altar where they engage in “warfare prayer,” commanding the demon to leave. They also use an ice ax to write the words “Jesus lives” on the mountain.76

Though the actions of these people might seem strange to many, teams like these are active in small towns and large cities throughout the world. The followers of NAR apostles and prophets often go to prominent locations in their communities—such as their capitol building or the highest mountain—and engage in what they call prophetic acts to release God’s power. These acts include driving stakes into the ground inscribed with passages of Scripture, taking Communion then burying the bread and wine, pouring kosher salt around the perimeters of the property, and anointing the site with oil. One team actually filled a balloon with anointing oil and bombed their target from an airplane.77
Though the specific acts they perform are different, and the locations to which they go vary, these teams share something in common. They are all attempting to wage spiritual warfare against powerful demons that rule over cities and nations. They believe casting out these demons from specific geographical regions is the best thing they can do to advance God’s kingdom on earth.
This leads to an important question: How exactly can Christians advance God’s kingdom on earth?
Most traditional Christians believe the best way to advance God’s kingdom is through sharing the gospel and sending out missionaries. But NAR apostles and prophets claim the church must also yield to the authority of modern-day apostles and prophets to whom God has given new strategies to advance his kingdom—a view known as dominionism.
