Shanice slipped into her night clothes after a nice, hot shower. Several times her eyes had fallen on the Bible that was on her pillow. It was where she would always place it after she woke up and made her bed in the morning. She felt ashamed that she hadn’t prayed earlier that morning, but lately she felt as though her faith was being tried. She knew her father would start spouting off Scriptures and she wouldn’t be able to stop him.

One of the reasons why she’d felt troubled all day was that she was still at a loss about what to pray about, concerning that situation, just as she was four months ago when Que had gotten angry with her and hung up the phone. Her emotions were carried her in different directions, but she continued to counsel the girls down at the Center. It was like any other day when she counseled Dove and her mother, except she was the one who’d put her prayers on pause. However, it was the meeting today that brought everything back. Sometimes when you feel alone in a situation it’s during those times that you remember you aren’t.

Shanice made her way over to the side of her bed and knelt down, but she didn’t say anything. Her eyes fell on her Bible but she didn’t reach for it like usual. Instead, she let her eyes snake from her Bible to the flowery, beige colored covers. From her flowery, beige colored covers to her plain white bedroom walls that held framed pictures mostly of her immediate family. She stared at them so long that she got lost in thought and before she knew it she was crying uncontrollably. Everything seemed to trigger her emotions.

When the faces of her best friends Fatima and Brittany went flashing through her mind, it was as if a lever had broken. It all came to her. She was afraid of losing Que the way she had lost her friends. The one person that she found who meant a lot to her she was afraid of losing. She’d never felt so alone in her life. It was a stillness that she didn’t recognize at all and it was far worse than having to attend her own two best friends’ funeral. It was the sudden chills that went up her spine, and then crawled back down. When Shanice raised her head her eyes fell on the tall, bright figure that filled up the open doorway to her bedroom. Her mother and father had told her all about angels, but she’d never seen one face to face.

Not until now.

The tall figure seemed to float swiftly towards her.

“Don’t worry,” the figure’s voice came ever so softly. “He’s changed. God is going to do marvelous things in both of your lives. Keep praying and do right. You know the Lord, and He loves you. Don’t be afraid when God takes you higher in Him.”

Shanice could do nothing more than cry and thank God. She cried because she was happy that Que was a changed man.
