Chapter 19

Why Wait?

As Ocevia and Azure left the area where the hot spring ran through the back of the caves, Markos stood beside Elios, a sleepy grin on his face. Her heart flipped at the sight of him, excitement of spending the night with him for the first time filling her. She realized he meant what he said, and that he wouldnʼt rush with her even if she wanted him to, but just being intimate with him at all was worth looking forward to.

Azure and Elios walked away, leaving the two of them alone near the main fire together. It was then that she realized his hair was damp, telling her he must have cleaned up in a separate part of the caverns while she and Azure were soaking.

“Are you ready to go to sleep, Ocevia?” Holding out his hand, Markos slipped it into hers, pulling her close.

She bit her lip, a grin spreading across her face as she walked with him across the main room and back into their private space. “Must we go to sleep just yet?”

As they entered their sleeping area, the fire was already blazing, the flames lighting up Markosʼ handsome face just enough for Ocevia to see the warmth in his eyes. He led her to the bed, dropping to his knee as she sat down. Reaching for her foot, he slid her unlaced boots off and set them down on the floor. When he was finished, his green eyes flicked up to hers, glancing at her from under thick lashes.

“What did you have in mind, little one, if not to sleep?”

Ocevia was quiet for a moment, not knowing how to ask for what she wanted. She longed for him to give her everything sheʼd been missing, his heart and his body, but she realized it would be asking for a lot, possibly more than he was ready or willing to give.

Seeming to sense her hesitation, he rose from his knees and sat on the bed next to her, taking her hands in his. “I realized something as we sat together by the fire,” he said as he held her gaze. “In a perfect world, we would take things slow. I would court you. We would fall in love and then I would marry you, build a family with you.”

Eyes flicking away, emotions warred inside Ocevia as Markos spoke. Desire, love, longing, and pain. The pain because somewhere deep inside her heart, she knew anything they shared would only be temporary. She belonged to the Sea Goddess, and Miris would stop at nothing to get her slaves back.

When she turned her eyes back to him, a tear trailed down her cheek. “But the world isnʼt perfect,” she said, her voice low.

Markos leaned forward, sweeping his finger across her cheek to wipe away the tear before pressing his lips to hers. His scent, and the slide of his tongue against hers, sent a shiver down Oceviaʼs spine, the sensation pooling between her thighs. When he pulled away, she was breathless, the intensity of his eyes only taking her breath away more.
