How difficult is it to restrain our hands when we see the inevitability of suffering approaching a loved one? The father knows that one day his son will regret his behavior. He knows that his son is headed for disappointment and failure. But in spite of his own personal agony and rejected love, he allows the boy to leave.

Just as this father is willing to endure pain rather than disown his son, so our heavenly Father sometimes releases us to reject His love and pursue our own self-will. Sometimes nothing will bring us around as effectively as experiencing the head-on consequences of our own sinful choices. The father could have tried to describe to his son the pain he was about to experience, but he would not have listened. The boy’s mind was made up. So his father let him go.

Could God not stop us from making that painful journey away from Him? Surely He knows the suffering that awaits us! Yes, He could force us to stay home, but He wants us to stay because we love Him of our own free will, not because He forces us. He allows us to experience the far country so that when we finally return, we are fully prepared to appreciate and receive His love.
