HINDRANCES TO FELLOWSHIP

Fellowship must be a team project if our alcoholic is to be helped to a life of total abstinence and permanent sobriety. It must come from the family, the church, friends, and associates. The first place the alcoholic should expect fellowship—at home—is usually the last place it is offered.

I have heard the indignant cries of those who have been hurt so deeply by their alcoholic loved one. “How can I offer fellowship to him when he has hurt me so much?”

The answer is found in the reply of the disciples when Christ told them they should forgive a person who had sinned against them seventy times seven.

“Lord, increase our faith” (Luke 17:4).

We cannot forgive enough to take such an individual back into fellowship without the help and strength that comes from God.

Marty Mann, founder of the national Council on Alcoholism, wrote from personal experience in her book Marty Mann’s New Primer on Alcoholism. One chapter is called “Home Treatment.”
