ALYCE I was glad he was alive and coming home, I told him. He sounded depressed.

“There was nothing for me when I got here,” he said.

Other POWs got folders with pictures of the family. I didn’t remember my family assistance officer asking for anything.

“We have to talk when I see you,” I said.

“Well, talk now.”

“No, there are things I have to say when I see you.”

I hung up and called Harold to come home. I called Willa and Marty in Honesdale. They already had their bags packed and headed up from Pennsylvania. I called my mother. Then I waited for the kids to get home. Suddenly we had newspapers calling again and TV people knocking at the door.
