For all its eccentricities this two-volume work is a masterpiece and a landmark, in Johnson’s own words, ‘setting the orthography, displaying the analogy, regulating the structures, and ascertaining the significations of English words’. It was an achievement that, in Boswell’s words, ‘conferred stability on the language of his country’, a stability that would be invaluable in the decades to come. But, though it made him famous and well esteemed, the Dictionary did not allay his incessant money troubles. In 1759 Johnson was so hard up that he was forced to dash off the potboiling fable Rasselas, to pay, he said, for his mother’s funeral.
