The bedroom door closed behind me and I threw my arms into the air on a stretch, releasing the tension that had gathered in my shoulders throughout the day. The fabric of my shirt slid over my muscular back as I pulled it off and tossed it haphazardly into the corner of the room with a tired sigh. Usually I tried to keep my bedroom—and the house at large—neat and organized, but my body was weary, simply wanting the respite my mattress offered.

My jeans met the ground moments before my body hit the bed, the sheets dragged up with half-hearted effort. One by one, I mentally checked in on my brothers before pulling the doors closed on each connection until there was only her. The mental link I shared with Nix wasn’t one I liked to close, I was constantly worried she might need me. Especially at night when she was alone in her room. Ugly nightmares often plagued her dreams, keeping her on the sharp brink between wakefulness and the deep, restorative sleep she needed. Leaving the connection open was my small way of looking out for her and making sure she was alright, though I couldn’t deny her warm presence brought me peace the likes of which I’d never felt before.

I momentarily battled with myself about the potential invasion of her privacy, but her dreams always projected loud and clear, practically invading my mind of their own free will. It wasn’t like I was digging around her head to learn her secrets, and I wouldn’t leave her to relive her past alone. Like all dreams, I couldn’t tell exactly what was a true memory and what was simply a mishmash of memory, emotion, and the mind extrapolating data. It didn’t really matter. It didn’t lessen the horror of what she experienced again and again every time she closed her eyes.

The argument was familiar, playing through my mind nightly before I passed out, and just like every night, I let Nix’s serene essence flood through my mind moments before I descended into sleep.

The soft glow of my alarm clock was all that greeted me in the dark room when I jolted breathlessly awake. Thick, radiating pain enveloped my mind, a phantom effect from Nix’s nightmare. Screaming cries pierced through my brain like a dagger stabbing into flesh, and my heart beat wildly in my chest, each thud threatening to break through my sternum. Silken sheets fisted in my fingers and the muscles in my jaw actually ached from the effort it took to hold myself back, to keep from going to Nix’s side and waking her from the dredges of her nightmare.

Visions of a large being looming above me played out like a horror movie, but these weren’t my memories and I wasn’t the one huddled on the floor below him. Squatting down, he grabbed Nix’s hand, seething at her young, fragile form on the cracked linoleum floor, yelling questions that came out as a garbled, unintelligible mess. It was always this way, his words and image unclear while his intentions were crystal.
