CHAPTER 29

The compound didn’t welcome Drezden or Raskyuil into their midst. Suspicious as they were of strange men in general, they definitely weren’t happy to see the ogre and troll standing outside their gates. Eleanor knew it the moment the guard Daniel stepped out from his post behind the wall to confront them as they approached, his rifle raised.

Daniel twitched nervously, his eyes cutting to her questioningly. He was scared. She supposed any sane person would be in most circumstances, but if he was looking to her for answers, perhaps there was some reasoning with him. If she could just get him to fetch Garret, perhaps she could at the very least hammer out some sort of agreement.

Her hope for that happening wilted when he was followed by five others, Jack at the fore of the group, sneering as he looked from her to the monsters in their company. Each of the men were heavily armed as they eyed the troll and ogre suspiciously. The only remotely friendly face she could see among them was Pat. His eyebrows lifted questioningly in her direction, and she started, “I can explain.”

Pat sidled forward, casting a wary glance at Jack. Lowering his rifle, he whispered loudly to Eleanor, “Girl, are you nuts? Those are monsters. If you’re trying to get yourselves killed, that’s your business, but leave us out of it.”

Eleanor rolled her eyes. “Pat, you know me better than that. I’m not suicidal. Drezden is with Martha,” she gestured to the ogre, “and Raskyuil here saved my life. Neither of them has any interest in harming anyone in there. Raskyuil doesn’t even wish to be here.”

The troll grunted in agreement at her side, drawing her attention up to him as the male scanned the wall with a grimace of distaste. She wasn’t sure if it was because of the sounds of panic coming from the other side, or due to the stench of the place. Neither was appealing in the least.

“Bullshit,” Jack sneered. “They are probably coming around to make off with our women. Creatures like those can’t be trusted at all.”

Drezden growled, making the hairs on her arm stand on end. Martha soothed her giant mate with a few whispered words, but Eleanor knew that wouldn’t last for long if the men continued to be offensive.

Eleanor looked beseechingly over at Daniel. “Can we please just speak with Garret so that we can come to some sort of workable solution?”

Her jaw clenched as Daniel glanced uncertainly at Jack. As if he had an authority around here! The other man shrugged nonchalantly, his grip tightening slightly around the barrel of his rifle.

“Suit yourself, Danny. We might as well have Garret here to clear them out of here all official like. So long as those things don’t step foot inside, I’m good.”

Daniel nodded and quickly slipped back through the gate. On the other side, there was a ruckus of raised voices, the loudest among them Casey. A moment later, the woman popped out, bristling like an angry terrier as her eyes fell on Jack.
