Chapter Sixteen

Moniqua

Laquen and I had been out riding through every hood that we thought his mama may have been in because he was going to try and talk to her and see if he could get her to go to rehab. I had to go off the only picture he had of her sober. There was no telling how she looked when she was on that shit.

“Oh shit, babe, there she is,” Laquen said. She was standing on Main Street with a bunch of crackheads. She was singing while the other lady danced and another man played the guitar. There was another man that stood there holding a hat that had change in it. I guess they were trying to raise money for their next hit. I must admit they had a little audience. I rolled my window down just a little to see how she sounded or if they were just trying to make a fool out of her.

“Oh my God, Quen, she can sing?” She had a voice like Beyoncé.

“Yea, she used to sing all the time. In fact, she loves singing and she used to always sing her troubles over as she says, but I guess that stopped helping and she started smoking them over. I guess she thought that it would really help, but it only made it worse,” he said, getting out the car. Even though I was scared, I still got out and followed behind him, scared as hell. I didn’t know how this was about to go.

We stood there until she finished that song. She stepped down off the sidewalk like she was on a stage.

“Laquan, what are you doing here boy? You know that I am trying to get this money so that I can make sure you got something to eat. Who is this fast tail heffa that you done brought to my job?”

“Ma, I am Laquen. Laquan is still locked up mama. This young lady is my fiancée, Moniqua. You are not at work. Will you come with me? I want you to get yourself together because I need you mama. You have missed out on so much in my life already. Please just come with me,” Quen spoke. She looked at him for a minute with hurt in her eyes, and then she walked over to her friends. She was talking loud, but she had her mouth as if she was whispering. It took everything in me not to laugh at her, only because I knew that she needed help.

“Just shut up, I said I’ll be back. My son is sick and he needs me to see about him for a little while. You can either respect it or check it. Who the fuck you take me for?” she said, bobbing her head up and down like she was about to fight.

“Hey, you a pretty little thing and I hope you been treating my son right cause he don’t need no scrubs. Look like you just want him for his money and he can do without you.
