Chapter Ten

A public lunch wasn’t a good idea, but Whitney didn’t love the idea of letting Reece back into the home they’d once shared, either, and she knew their first meeting since their divorce couldn’t be when they both walked onto the Piper Kane set. Not in front of the entire crew and definitely not right before the first table-read.

Whitney pushed the button to open the gate. It was early. Too early for a night owl like Reece, but that was their best chance for privacy. She opened the front door a crack and went into the kitchen to pour herself a cup of coffee.

“Whit?”

“In here.”

Reece rounded the corner and stopped. “Hi.”

There was hesitation in her voice. Whitney could appreciate that. She was hesitant too but probably for different reasons. She stayed on the other side of the island and tried not to make eye contact just yet. “Coffee?”

“God, yes.” Reece set her purse on the table and pulled out a chair. “Should I sit here?”

“Sit wherever you like.” Whitney poured another cup and took them both over to the table. She chose not to sit directly across from Reece but one chair to the left. A strategy based on nothing except her petty desire to inflame the permanent kink in Reece’s neck.

Her blond hair was piled on top of her head the way she usually wore it on the weekends. Her jeans were also of the weekend variety, distressed and sitting low on her hips. All of this was good as far as Whitney was concerned. It meant Reece wasn’t trying too hard. She was being her normal self, not the Hollywood version.

Whitney leaned back in her chair and folded her arms before she looked Reece in the eye. “That was quite a stunt you pulled on Falcon. I don’t suppose you really thought through how it would affect my life. All the unwanted attention, all the speculation. We are long over, and you know it. No amount of ink is going to change that.”

“Okay, so I guess we’re going to be all formal like we’re in the lawyer’s office.” Reece dropped her gaze and sipped her coffee. “I’ve missed my favorite cup.”

“Take it.”

“Ouch.”

Whitney raised an eyebrow. “Ouch? Really, Reece?”

“Okay, I know. I get it.”

Whitney wasn’t sure Reece got anything. Did she have any idea of the damage she’d done? The pain she’d caused? Probably not. She did seem a bit shaky, though. “Are you nervous?”

“Terrified,” Reece said. “So I’ll just come right out and say it. I miss us, and I want you back.”

“How convenient since you just got dumped.” Whitney made sure she sounded confident and unshaken. She had to if she was going to have any control over the conversation.

“Actually, I did the dumping,” Reece said. “I should’ve done it sooner, but Kat is a strong personality. Way stronger than me.”

“She forced you to have sex with her? Maybe you should’ve called the police instead of moving in with her.”

“That’s not what I mean. I mean, I was a fool, Whit.
