A week had gone by and the dean of the school had given Leslie a granted two weeks off to mourn the loss of her mother, starting on that Monday when she called Mr. Brown to let him know what had happened. She’d be going back this following Monday but her head wasn’t in the right place. She’d only nod at Yanni whenever she’d come around or stare at Emma with puffy eyes, but there was nothing to say. This was not the Leslie they had been accustomed to. She wasn’t the same, and even Leslie herself could admit that.

This morning was a Saturday and Leslie was the first up. Ace’s heavy arm was over her ribs and it was clear that he held her again last night. When she fluttered her eyes open, the clock on her side displayed “8:20AM” in neon green. It wouldn’t go off for another ten minutes so she eased herself out of bed and looked back at Ace over her shoulder. She saw him differently now. There was more about him to see. Not just his athletic build or his handsome face, or the way he kept his hair cut low. He was patient with her, a gentlemen, he didn’t pressure her or make a move on her because she was vulnerable. She admitted a few nights ago when she cried her eyes out in front of him, after learning that her mother would end up being government property, that she misjudged him completely. He wasn’t like the others. And in her findings she discovered that they had a lot in common, including how no matter what happened and when, Ace always stacked his money. And this morning would be no different.

With only ten minutes to spare she rolled him up a blunt and left it in the ashtray on the nightstand on her side of the bed, and then she’d gone into the master bathroom to get herself together. After flicking on the light, she stared at herself in the mirror from the doorway. She noticed everything about herself and she wondered what she would change if anything. In the mirror, she saw Ace sleeping peacefully on his bed and she bit her bottom lip. Maybe it was time for a new start and a new look. What if he didn’t come on to her because of how she looked so rough? Sure she was a beautiful girl on her own, but the image of the Ebony magazine on the counter didn’t make the thought of a makeover any better.

She spent all of three minutes combing her hair with her fingers, styling it in different ways— putting it up in a bun, a side ponytail, letting it hang over her shoulders— to finally decide on just wearing down and over one shoulder.
